Luxembourg Statistical Society – Celebrating Statistics

Published July 5, 2022

There are two kinds of people in the world: those who jump with joy at the thought of statistics, and those who wonder what even goes on in a statistical society? The Luxembourg Statistical Society (LSS) is for both kinds of people.

In the Beginning

The LSS was founded in 2014 to bring people together around statistics. Membership is open to everyone; and while membership is obvious for data scientists, mathematicians, and the like, all of us, no matter what we do, use statistics and can benefit from learning more about them. A great way to develop statistical literacy is to join the LSS and learn for ourselves. In modern times we have massive amounts of information but doubts are created about even the most basic facts. Determining the difference between "lies, damned lies, and statistics", to paraphrase Mark Twain (or Benjamin Disraeli) is more important than ever.

Uni.lu alumna @Guendalina Palmirotta said that “I am impressed how science provides logic, order, and sense to this territory and even beyond. It allows us to better understand the world around us but also to improve it. Science, especially maths is a tool for life.” It’s this tool that the LSS tries to teach by hosting several seminars per year, including a yearly event with the Luxembourg Science Centre on 20 October, World Statistics Day.

The LSS is also a place to meet like-minded people like PhD candidate Tara Trauthwein, whose "first course in probability and statistics was at the University of Luxembourg. Ever since, I have loved the mixture of abstraction and concrete applications the field has to offer, to the point that I am now doing a PhD in it!” The LSS’s seminars are particularly interesting for new members who are starting their careers as they can network with everyone who’s anyone in the world of statistics.

The Luxembourg Statistical Society is a recent addition to the GradPack partners. New graduates who join the LSS will enjoy their first year’s membership at the same rate as the student price, a discount of 60% off the standard membership. To benefit from this offer, graduates should register using the link received with their alumni network registration, mentioning their status as alumni.

FUN FACT

We only realize what we’re missing once we’ve tried it and Luxembourg’s statisticians are no different. The Luxembourg Statistical Society was founded in 2014 after a conference the year before celebrating the International Year of Statistics. it was only then that they realized that they could celebrate statistics every year.
